Steve Emery began a concentration in the visual arts at Sanderson Highschool in Raleigh, NC, where he studied art with Bob Rankin and Mabel Bullock. His artistic training continued first at East Carolina University and then at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was influenced by Marvin Saltzman and James Gadsden. After college, where he graduated with a degree in Philosophy, he discontinued painting and drawing while pursuing a career in Healthcare Information Technology and starting a family.

Steve returned to painting and drawing in 2006 and began selling paintings a few years later when he helped to found the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts. He works primarily in watercolor, acrylics, and mixed media on paper. Currently he is focusing on drawing from life - both the human figure and sketching on location. He has paintings in private collections around the United States and in Australia, Canada, and Dubai.
